3 Reasons Why Appetite Suppressants Are Not Ideal For Weight Loss

The market is full of appetite suppressants, otherwise known as diet pills, that claim to be effective in helping you lose weight fast. These are supplements that work to curb your food cravings, limiting your food consumption.

According to the National Institutes of Health, 15 percent of adults in the U.S. have taken a type of appetite suppressant or weight-loss dietary supplement at one point in their lives. Women more than men are prone to buying these diet pills, creating a profitable billion-dollar industry.

However, our Hudson dietitian has shared the following reasons why appetite suppressants are not ideal for weight loss:

1. There’s no guarantee they are actually effective

Though there are doctor-prescribed and FDA-approved appetite suppressants, the National Institute of Health said that little is known about how effective these pills are. Many supplements are also linked to harmful side effects that may interfere with other medications or cause the following worrying symptoms:

  • High blood pressure
  • Increased heart rate
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Liver damage
  • Kidney problems
  • Diarrhea
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Anxiety and agitation

2. Several appetite suppressants have unapproved and unlisted ingredients

There are well-documented cases of weight loss pills containing unapproved, untested, and unlisted ingredients. Some of these ingredients are banned or recalled pharmaceutical compounds yet these are still found in many dietary products.

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, the manufacturers of these appetite suppressants may replace the banned chemical with a related chemical that has yet to be tested, making the pill even more unsafe.

3. Appetite suppressants mess with mood and metabolism

Appetite suppressants are supposed to help stimulate your metabolism with ingredients that affect the central nervous system. Unfortunately, any drug that messes with a person’s mood and the body’s metabolism will bring dangerous side effects, especially when it’s not regulated, as it is easier to misuse and abuse. Some of these pills might even have the same potency as certain dangerous drugs like opiates.

According to our Hudson dietitian, appetite suppressants are not regulated and they’re even sold online so there’s easier access in other channels aside from the pharmacy.
