If you’re looking to improve your health and general appearance, your first idea is probably to lose some weight. You are looking at various blogs and websites trying to find useful information and ways to make that happen. But with so many different (and often opposite!) opinions out there, how do you know which way to go? What is the right way to go about losing weight? What is true, and what is false? In our previous article, we introduced 3 dieting myths that many people fall for. Today we are busting 3 other myths to make sure you reach your goals and don’t get sidetracked by these popular misconceptions.
1. Weight Loss Clinic in Spring Hill Myth 4: Give up sugar to see quick results
This one sounds about right, doesn’t it? Especially when we talk about the harming effects sugar has on your body on and on again. But if you’ve been reading some of our previous articles, you know that here in our Weight Loss Clinic in Spring Hill we believe in moderation. As our Registered Dietitian Susan always says – life should be enjoyed. And what makes life enjoyable among other things? Good food, of course! Dieting isn’t about giving up things – it’s about making better choices. If you enjoy sweet food, there’s no reason for you to stop eating sugar. Just make sure you’re choosing the right kind, and you don’t go crazy with the amount. What are some healthy sweet options if you are on a diet? Go for fruits, smoothies, smoothie bowls, homemade granola (store-bought is loaded with sugar and conservatives), honey… There are so many options for all you sweet tooths out there!
2. Weight Loss Clinic in Spring Hill Myth 5: Eating after 6 pm will make you fat
Not true. Yes, eating a huge meal right before you go to bed is not a good idea, but the general rule you need to remember is eat your dinner about 2 hours before sleep. When was the last time you went to bed at 8 pm? I thought so! No need for you to starve in the evening. Adapt your meal schedule to your lifestyle. If you work until late and you usually go to bed around 10 pm, a light dinner at 8 pm is more than okay. Having said that, we would like to remind you about the benefits of having at least 7 hours of sleep every night. It’s not only great for your overall health, but it will also help you achieve your ideal weight much sooner.
3. Weight Loss Clinic in Spring Hill Myth 6: Eating low fat products helps losing weight
That’s probably one of the worst misconception out there. We’ve been demonizing fat for way too long and it has to stop! Yes, fat is caloric but it’s also absolutely essential for the body to work properly. For example, fat causes your body to absorb vitamins better, so having a bit of olive oil dressing with your salad will make it even healthier. Moreover, fat equals flavor. If you take fat out of the food (which is basically how low fat products are made) you need to replace it with something to make the product taste better. The easiest and cheapest way to do that is to replace it with sugar. As a result, ironically, low fat products are much more likely to make you fat than foods with regular fat percentage.
